From East To West And Back!
Professor Michael Wormstone, UEA has had a busy April! Here is his latest blog:
April was a busy time! At the start of the month, I journeyed to Guangzhou in China. This is China’s third largest city and home to the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre (ZOC) at Sun-Yat Sen University. ZOC ran a symposium on the Molecular Mechanisms for Eye Development & Pathogenesis and invited me to deliver a lecture.
The symposium took place over two days and comprised a collection of distinguished speakers that could engage in discussion and inspire and educate the students within the host institution. The newly built facilities were state-of-the-art and my lecture was warmly received. There was limited time to explore the city, but I still found time to scale the Canton tower, which provided a view 460m above terra firma.
Three days after I arrived, I headed home, but I felt the trip was worthwhile and sowed the seed for future links and possible collaborations.
I managed to spend a couple of weeks in Norwich before I headed to Honolulu in Hawaii to attend the annual ARVO meeting. On this occasion I was joined by Andrew Smith and Thao Huynh. We all had posters on the final day. Despite the timing of our session, the attendance was excellent and we were kept very busy with interested people.
It was a nice end to the meeting, which over its duration was packed with interest and fuelled ideas in all of us. We came back eager to introduce these concepts and techniques and have set about applying these to our work, once our bodies dealt with the jet lag from an 11 hour time difference.
