Meet first year PhD student Thao Huynh, working under the supervision of Professor Michael Wormstone in the Eye Lab at UEA! Thao has just got back form the ARVO conference in Hawaii. We are delighted that she has had a great experience there and she is thoroughly enjoying her studies so far, we wish her all the luck with her PhD! Read her blog below:
This is my first time to write an entry for the HRT blog so let me introduce myself briefly. I am Thao Huynh or Thao, a first-year PhD student at the Eye Lab of Dr Michael Wormstone. My project is generously funded by the HRT.
I am writing this while we (Michael, Andy – Andy Smith, and I) are at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, waiting for our connection flight back to Norwich after a wonderful trip attending the ARVO 2018 Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
There are so many “first-time” experiences with this trip: the first time at ARVO, first time at a conference, the first time in the US, the first time presenting a poster in such a large-scale event and so on. Ah, I was also lucky enough to be awarded the ARVO International Travel Grant. I have learnt so much for the last few days from experts in the field and peers around the world. In addition to making new friends and laying down first bricks for my research network, seeing Michael and Andy enjoying different types of beer and having some childhood revelation were definitely priceless! Also, Michael and Andy, you are such cool and caring companions!
I would like to express my deep gratitude towards the Trust for providing us with the financial support, my supervisor for giving me this amazing opportunity, and Andy for offering me numerous advice.
And now, I am coming home to the Eye Lab, super recharged with motivation and new ideas.
